The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC has detained Osita Okechukwu, the Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON).
Okechukwu was said to have reported at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja around 1:30 pm on yesterday, being Saturday, January 29, 2022, as a result of an invitation extended to him on alleged case of conspiracy, abuse of office and misappropriation of public funds.
He is said to be undergoing questions for allegedly embezzlement of N1.3 billion as of the time of filing this report.
When contacted, EFCC spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, confirmed that the VON DG was invited by the commission and that he was still in their custody.
Uwujaren, however, declined further comment on why Okechukwu was invited.
There are indications that the VON DG’s invitation and detention cannot be unconnected with his recently outspokenness on sensitive national issues.
He had in recent month asked the Federal Government to release Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) who is currently in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
It has also been observed that he had contributed to a discourse on the electoral bill among others. END
