Not less than twelve hoodlums laid siege for policemen on duty in a security pindown point, and shot dead an Inspector, and wounded four others.
The incident happened during a heavy downpour, in the early hours of yesterday, at a bus stop around Okagwe Junction, Ohafia, in Ohafia LGA.
The yet to be identified hoodlums, were said to have suddenly attacked the police Officers, who were taking cover inside the Security pindown, situated at the location and opened fire on them before they could realize what was going on.
It was gathered that the brave police men, returned fire for fire, inflicted some of their attackers with bullet wounds , which they fled with.
It was also gathered that Abia police is now trailing the hoodlums, and have vowed to catch up with them no matter where they run to.
Meanwhile, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia state, has, in conjunction with security agencies in the state, embarked on a thorough investigation of the matter to ascertain the cause of the attack.
The Governor , who expressed regret over the attack that resulted into the death of the Inspector, and injuries inflicted on four others said he would leave no stone unturned to apprehend the culprits.
A release issued by the state Commissioner for information, Chief John appealed to all medical facilities in the state to report any patient with gunshot injuries, who seeks for treatment to be reported to the nearest police station.
Also, relevant Transition Council Chairmen in the zone have been alerted to keep their eyes open over such an incident. END
