The President of the Niger Delta Youth Peace Builders, Comrade Chibuike Emmanuel has called on the Federal Government to expedite action in their efforts to rescue victims of Flood disaster which has attacked many of the Niger/Delta towns and villages in the South Eastern states.
In a press release he made available to newsmen, Emmanuel pleaded for an urgent action to be taken, so that those who are currently affected by the flood disaster, can be provided with shelter and food in a more safer environment.
He explained that almost all the states in the Niger Delta region have been overtaken by the flood disaster, which has rendered families homeless and put the lives of indigenes at great risks.
According to him, with the exception of some places in a state like Abia, many other south Eastern states in the Niger/Delta region have been submerged by the flood.
He therefore urged Federal Government to, as a matter of urgency send rescue team to these affected areas in the region to evacuate residents who are currently stocked.
He lamented that the victims have risked their lives in the torrential flood in their efforts to get to safer places, stating that properties worth billions of naira have already being submerged by the angry flood.
“Many buildings have been submerged while many more are at the risk of being affected by the flood water”.
He pleaded for an immediate action to be taken to rescue those affected, and urged the government to look for a lasting solution to tackle the issue of perennial flooding in Nigeria.
He said that one of those who have already shown concern over the plight of the victims of the flood disaster is the Abia state All Progressive Congress APC, Governorship Candidate, High Chief Ikechi Emenike.
According to him, when the incident was brought to Emenike’s knowledge, he quickly called for efforts, to provide more IDP camps for the displaced persons and as well, for a monitoring team to be set up to monitor more areas that may likely be submerged.
He expressed gratitude to the Governorship hopeful for sympathizing with the victims of the flood attack, in some states of the South East, South South and Middle Belt regions.
He called on some other personalities in the Niger/Delta region to show good example like Emenike that they are also their brothers keepers.
It is currently being observed that the heavy down pour that has visited the south east in recent days has flooded most of the areas in the region , thereby putting their lives at great risks. END
