The Abia State Governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu has assured Teachers that he will start the implementation of the Federal Governments 60/65 and 30/35 age of retirement for teachers in Abia.
He disclosed this during the 2021 World Teachers Day celebration in Umuahia, the Abia state capital.
The Governor , who was represented by the Chief of Staff office to the Deputy Governor, Sir Don Ubani also disclosed that his Government has commenced the payment of arrears of salaries owed teachers in public schools in the state.
He noted that the welfare of teachers in the state would continue to remain paramount in his administration.
The ceremony took place at the NUT Secretariat, Umuahia, where the Chairman Nigeria Union of Teachers NUT Abia state, Comrade Kizito Kalu also commended the Governor on his efforts at ensuring that payment of salaries of teachers both in Primary and Junior Secondary schools has improved.
Comrade Kizito Kalu also noted with dismay the acute shortage of Teachers in public schools in the state, stating that it has resulted to unhealthy teacher-learner ratio.
The theme of the 2021 World Teachers’ Day is ” Teachers at the Heart of Education Recovery”.
The event witnessed presentation of three vehicles to Teachers by the state government and March past by Teachers drawn from the seventeen local government area of the state.
Though there were murmuring that the vehicles which were promised to teachers last year and were even brought to the venue of the event are yet to be delivered to them. END
